Talents used are talents multiplied. Success is not the result of chance or of destiny; it is the outworking of God’s own providence, the reward of faith and discretion, of virtue and persevering effort. The Lord desires us to use every gift we have; and if we do this, we shall have greater gifts to use. He does not supernaturally endow us with the qualifications we lack; but while we use that which we have, He will work with us to increase and strengthen every faculty. By every wholehearted, earnest sacrifice for the Master’s service our powers will increase. While we yield ourselves as instruments for the Holy Spirit’s working, the grace of God works in us to deny old inclinations, to overcome powerful propensities, and to form new habits. As we cherish and obey the promptings of the Spirit, our hearts are enlarged to receive more and more of His power, and to do more and better work. Dormant energies are aroused, and palsied faculties receive new life. – {COL 353.1}

You don’t really want to buy so many new plants all the time? You are thinking about saving money? You would like to share your plants from your garden with neighbors and friends? Or maybe you just see how the plants are getting too old and understand that they have a need of refreshment?

If we understand the structure of a plant we can discover that there are different ways how to propagate plants. Not all different methods are possible with all plants. There are four main ways of what one can do to multiply plants:
Sowing - Seeds are placed into the ground
Cutting - A piece of the root or the stem of the original plant is placed into moist soil and starts growing
In vitro propagation - Clonal multiplication of the plants
Divison or separation
Today I will go a bit deeper into division or separation of the plants.
Here is a short video about how to divide a plant practically:
Its important to plan this propagation in spring or autumn and not necessarily in hot summer because this would mean more stress for the plants. The plant division or separation is especially possible with…
some perennial herbs like:
Melissa officinalis
Sanguisorba minor
Allium schoenoprasum
Salvia officinalis

ornamental perennial plants like:
Alchemilla
Echinacea purpurea
Pennisetum, Miscanthus, Carex and other kinds of grass plants
Aquilegia
Iris, Hemerocallis, Paeonia
and much more

Fruit plants like:
Raspberries
Strawberries

Perennial vegetables like:
Allium fistulosum
Allium ursinum
Cynara scolymus (Artichoke)
Helianthus tuberosus (Topinambur)

In multiplying plants, division and separation is a faster and effective way to propagate plants but you will see that it's not always so easy depending on the plants.

I wish you God’s wisdom, patience and joy in trying this out!

Johanna Köbelin got trained in a beautiful perennial nursery in south-west Germany from 2009 and was working there for some years. After getting new experiences in gardening and medical missionary work in TGM in Austria for 3 years, she is now studying in Bogenhofen (Austria) for becoming a teacher, to learn how to connect Gardening and True Education.
